John Danford Hillman, 72, of Yakima, Washington, died suddenly and unexpectedly at home on March 29, 2025, while working outside enjoying the sunshine. Born November 14, 1952, in Tacoma, Washington, John was adopted and raised in Yakima, Washington, by Jack and Frances Hillman.
He grew up on an apple orchard, spending much of his time at an early age with his grandfather and father in the orchard and learning to drive tractor. He attended West Valley schools and graduated from West Valley High School in 1971.
He graduated from Washington State University in 1976, with a BS in Bacteriology and Public Health, and continued his education, graduating from Tacoma General Hospital School of Medical Technology in 1977. In 1978, he went to work for St. Elizabeth Hospital, where he spent the next 40+ years. His lab work, also included locations in Prosser, Toppenish, Olympia, and Ellensburg. He really enjoyed the people he worked with at each institution and kept in touch with many of them over the years.
John was always a voracious reader, and although this was an interest all his life, his true passion became his family. As his children grew, he planned elaborate birthday parties, ski trips throughout the Northwest, ocean vacations that included plane rides along the coast, sailing vessels, and kites that could lift you off the ground. He was the "equipment" guy for each sport his children participated in.
His volunteer work with Yakima Youth Soccer Association led him from painting fields early on Saturday mornings, to becoming District Commissioner. Once the children became adults, he enjoyed our many travels together, including zip lines in Thailand, visiting Hobbiton in New Zealand, riding 4x4's in northern Panama, and spelunking at Carlsbad Cavern. Although he may be remembered for his intelligence, humor, quick wit, and willingness to help others, we must not forget his hoarding skills when it came to cars, tools, and much more. "It ain't in the havin', it's in the gettin'"
He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Patti, their two children, Andria (Quin), and Linc (Bri), and granddaughter, Mackenzie Lois. His siblings include Terri Peiskee, Dean Peiskee, Tina Zan, Derrick Peiskee, Anthony Peiskee, Jeanne Andreski, Eric Peiskee, and Dan Hillman. He is preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Frances Hillman, his sister, Laurie Massett, his father, Gene Peiskee, his mother, Amaryllis Peiskee, and his brother, Douglas Peiskee.
A celebration of John's life will be held in June.
