Milton, WA - Janet Elaine Aaberg, age 87, formerly of Selah, Washington, passed away peacefully on October 27, 2025 in Tacoma of cancer. She was born and raised in Portland, Oregon, where she graduated from Girls Polytechnic High School in 1955. Bright, driven, and talented, Janet served as ASB President, excelled academically, and was a gifted pianist. She earned a full scholarship to Portland State College, where she completed her Business Associate's degree.
Janet built a distinguished 40-year career as a legal secretary, known for her intelligence, precision, and steadfast work ethic. In 1961, she married Eric R. Aaberg (d. 2019), and together they shared 58 years of marriage.
Those who knew Janet remember her first for her kindness. She was generous of heart and spirit, a woman who found joy in supporting others and went out of her way to make those around her feel valued and cared for. Her happiest moments were spent with family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren whom she adored and lovingly spoiled at every opportunity. Her home, her table, and her life were always open, and full, to those she cherished.
Janet also had a quiet but unmistakable adventurous spirit. She loved to travel -- whether exploring Alaska, Europe, taking road trips to Mexico, or journeying farther to experience new places and cultures. Animals held a special place in her heart; she treated all with deep affection, respect, and gentleness. She delighted in the simple wonders of the world around her. Her curiosity, warmth, and joy in small adventures enriched her world, and brightened the lives of everyone who shared those moments with her.
Janet is survived by her daughter, Kathleen Aaberg Olsen; her son Glen Aaberg (Vicki); and her brother-in-law Eric M. Aaberg. She leaves behind five grandchildren -- Gabriel Matson, Samara Matson Wartes, Mark Olsen, Isaac Aaberg, and Isabel Aaberg -- and four great-grandchildren -- Summer Wartes, Richard Wartes, Malakai Wartes, and Annabelle Wartes -- along with extended family and close friends who miss her dearly.
Janet's legacy is one of gentleness, grace, and lifelong dedication to the people she loved. Her family takes comfort in knowing she is at peace, surrounded by loved ones that preceded her in death. May her memory remain a blessing and her kindness carried forward.
Her family gives deep thanks to the compassionate caregivers at Franciscan Hospice House, Mill Ridge Village, and the entirety of her close friends, families, and neighbors. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Humane Society or the Yakima Humane Society.
