Sunnyside, WA - In Loving Memory of Alonzo Marquez

February 25, 1945 - September 18, 2025

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Alonzo Marquez, who departed this life on September 18, 2025, at the age of 80.

Alonzo was born in Kansas City, Kansas to Antonio and Concha Marquez. He grew up working in the fields alongside his parents, 12 siblings, and extended family. His life was defined by service, hard work, and unwavering principles.

He proudly served in the Army National Guard. He was honored with the opportunity to serve as bodyguard to Bobby Kennedy. Alonzo earned his college degree from the University of Washington while working in construction -- a reflection of his perseverance and dedication. He was a passionate advocate for civil rights and justice, serving as Chair of the Democratic Party in Yakima County and remaining an influential voice in local politics for decades.

Alonzo was also a gifted storyteller and historian. For years, he contributed to the Viva weekly publication, where he documented and celebrated the lives of over 100 Hispanic pioneer families of the Yakima Valley, preserving their histories and honoring their legacies through his writing.

He was a man of great knowledge, heart, and humility -- known for his wisdom, his love of conversation, and his deep connection to the community he served and cherished.

He is survived by Tamara Marquez, his children Alzee Marquez, Kayla Tanner (John), and Lydia Sampson (Alex), and his cherished grandchildren: Zayden Sampson, Ezaleigh Sampson, Jensen Tanner, Malaki Sampson, and Mia Sampson.

His presence will be deeply missed, and his memory will live on in every life he touched and every story he told.
