Yakima, WA - Alfonso Perales Sr, 91 of Gleed, WA passed away peacefully on March 4th, 2025, surrounded by his children. Born on January 23rd, 1934, in Refugio, Texas to Francisco and Herminia Padilla Perales; he was one of nine children. In his early years he migrated with his family throughout Arizona, Mississippi, Arkansas, Montana, Oregon, and California eventually settling in the Outlook and Sunnyside WA area. Soon after, he met and married Ramona Gamboa in 1958; they were happily married for 62 years and had eight children. They enjoyed dancing, traveling, and spending time with their family.
Born during the challenging era of the Great Depression, he and his family faced hardships from a young age. Despite his youth he took on the responsibility of working to help support the family. Their days were filled with the demanding tasks of farm labor, where they worked tirelessly with mules, as mechanized equipment was not financially available to them. The lack of modern conveniences made their various farm work even more challenging.
Due to the necessity of contributing to the family, Dad was unable to attend schooling beyond the 3rd grade. He attended a one-room country schoolhouse, where he was entrusted by the teacher with the important task of starting the fire in the wood stove each morning. This responsibility was a source of great pride for him.
Throughout his life, our dad has held various jobs that showcase his versatility and strong work ethic. His journey began as a farm hand, and he later took on the dual roles of roofer by day and custodian by night. Eventually, he became a farm labor contractor, managing and coordinating labor for local farmers in the lower Yakima Valley.
Dad never met a stranger. He had a remarkable ability to strike up conversations with people quickly turning them into friends. He once shared a piece of wisdom with one of his sons, saying, "Mijo, you have a lot of friends out there; you just have to go out and meet them."
Dad's personality was truly exceptional. Many of our relatives admired their Tio Poncho as a mentor and father figure frequently seeking his guidance and wisdom. Affectionately known as their favorite uncle, he shared a strong bond with them. Always ready to lend a helping hand, Dad's generosity and kindness left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him.
His faith and trust in his Lord Jesus Christ carried him throughout his life, giving him the strength and courage to overcome the challenges that he encountered. Our dad was a true example of generosity, always willing to give to others. As a dedicated provider, he ensured that his family never went without. His compassion touched the lives of many, and his acts of selflessness were a testament to his character.
Alfonso is survived by his children: Al Jr, Beatrice (Ralph), Ray (Lisa), Ruben, Connie (Travis). Grandchildren, Maggie, Marissa (Nick), Kendra, Sophia, Tryston and Payton and two great grandchild Luka and Andre. Brother Robert Perales (Outlook) and sister Guadalupe Leal (Texas).
